In 1949, brothers Edward M. and W. Murray Clark started teaching and training bears for show work, a tradition that Clark family members continue to this day. The late W. Murray Clark developed a rapport and understanding of these intelligent animals which he passed on to his children.
"Each performance is unique," Murray says. "The weather, dynamics in the den, audience reaction - any number of things can affect the bear's attention and distract them from the performance." Clark's Bears is one of the few roadside attractions that has survived since the Roaring 20's.
The White Mountain Central Railroad offers a 25-minute 2½ mile train ride. Travel through its 1904 covered bridge across the scenic Pemigewasset River and into Wolfman's territory! This 65-ton standard gauge engine was used on the Newport Dinner Train in Newport, RI. The White Mountain Central Railroad purchased this locomotive in 2004 and has used it ever since.
1884 Pemigewasset Hook and Ladder Fire Station
A tribute to the history and heritage of firefighting, you'll see antique horse drawn fire engines, wagons and other tools of this heroic trade.
Americana Museum
This brick museum on Main Street is chock full of old time Americana. It contains treasures from our early electrical, mechanical, and advertising past such as fully-restored nickelodeons, steam and gas engines and early household appliances.
Avery's Garage at Clark's Bears
Tour this replica gas station on Main Street to see early motoring memorabilia, vintage motorcycles and antique autos, including a fully-restored 1931 LaSalle Touring car and Moxie Horse-Mobile.
