Mount Rushmore National Memorial, located 25 miles southwest of Rapid City, is an awe-inspiring experience and a “must-see” on your vacation. The faces of four American presidents—George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln—are carved from a granite mountainside high above the treetops of the Black Hills. Carving took 14 years to complete and cost $1 million but this Shrine of Democracy is priceless to all Americans.

The project was started in 1948 at the request of Chief Henry Standing Bear who invited sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski to carve a mountain to honor the heritage, tradition and culture of North American Indians. He died unexpectedly at age 74 on Oct. 20, 1982. Korczak's wife Ruth and their family have continued the project working with the Crazy Horse Memorial Foundation.

Imagine an entire city on the National Historic Register. What you'll see in Deadwood today is a careful, accurate restoration of a historically significant city. Deadwood's extensive Victorian architecture is unique to the West. While the gold rush of 1876 brought the likes of Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane, it also provided the wealth to construct a thriving commercial center in the heart of the Black Hills of South Dakota.

The Wildlife Loop Road, located within Custer State Park, offers the traveler a wide variety of experiences. Many of the park's wildlife species occupy this area and are commonly seen. They include buffalo, bighorn sheep, antelope, deer, elk, coyote, prairie dog, and numerous birds. The road follows the varied landscape offering views of the higher portions of the Black Hills, badlands, endless sky, and lush streambeds. The park is home to one of the worlds largest buffalo herds.

The Journey Museum takes you on an incredible trek through time as it tells the story of the Black Hills through interactive displays. When your journey is complete, you will fully understand the legacy of the land and its people.

Venture into the world of Gutzon Borglum, the sculptor of Mount Rushmore, from the blasting of the stone to the grandeur of the "Seated Lincoln." On the tour you will meet the artist, his family and the famous people who were his friends. Discover what motivated Gutzon Borglum and why he began at age 60 what men half his age wouldn't attempt.

High Plains Western Heritage Center contains a 5-State Regional Museum founded to honor the Old West Pioneers and American Indians of North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Wyoming and Montana. Western Artifacts, Western Art, Live Animals and Family History Displays are used as a determinant of Historical Events.
