Since 1931, The Walters Art Museum contains a renowned collection of art from from all over the world in the hopes of bringing people from various backgrounds together for discovery, learning and the enjoyment of art.

Visiting The Walters Art Museum

The Walters Art Museum is housed in three conjoined, fully handicapped accessible buildings. It is surrounded by flowers and fountain-filled parks in the heart of the Mount Vernon Cultural District.  

The Centre Street Building

The largest of the three buildings, The Centre Street Building was designed in the Brutalist style in 1974 and renovated in 2001.  Here you will be greeted by a four story glass curtain entryway and a spectacular hanging staircase. This building also houses the Museum Café and Store.

The Charles Street Building

The center of The Charles Street Building features the Renaissance Sculpture Court which is a replica of Palazzo Balbi’s cortile designed in 1630.  Surrounded by exquisite marble, you will be awed by European Art.  Also housed in this building is one of the greatest collections of Italian paintings in America. 

Hackerman House

Ranked amongst the most handsome buildings in the city, this mansion was built in 1850 and opened to the public in 1991.  It houses the Walters’ Asian collection and features ornately carved ceilings and a grand spiral staircase.  The second floor boasts a calming meditation space with bamboo floor coverings and sparse furnishings.

Café Q

Café Q is open all hours the Museum is open.  Specialty coffees, tea, smoothies, as well as lunch selections are available such as Turkey Breast, Grilled Salmon on Ciabatta, Gourmet Egg Salad and delicious wraps.

Museum Store

The Museum Store is open Wednesday through Sunday from 10 am to 5 pm and features a wide selection of merchandise including posters, china, books, jewelry and select children’s gifts.  You will be sure to find something to please the art lover in your life. 

Travel Tips

-The Walters Museum is elevator equipped and fully handicap accessible.  Wheelchairs are available to borrow for free on a first come, first served basis.

-Still photography is allowed in the permanent collections areas.
