The Walters Art Museum is housed in three conjoined, fully handicapped accessible buildings. It is surrounded by flowers and fountain-filled parks in the heart of the Mount Vernon Cultural District.
The Centre Street Building
The largest of the three buildings, The Centre Street Building was designed in the Brutalist style in 1974 and renovated in 2001. Here you will be greeted by a four story glass curtain entryway and a spectacular hanging staircase. This building also houses the Museum Café and Store.
The Charles Street Building
The center of The Charles Street Building features the Renaissance Sculpture Court which is a replica of Palazzo Balbi’s cortile designed in 1630. Surrounded by exquisite marble, you will be awed by European Art. Also housed in this building is one of the greatest collections of Italian paintings in America.
Hackerman House
Ranked amongst the most handsome buildings in the city, this mansion was built in 1850 and opened to the public in 1991. It houses the Walters’ Asian collection and features ornately carved ceilings and a grand spiral staircase. The second floor boasts a calming meditation space with bamboo floor coverings and sparse furnishings.
