Visiting the Oklahoma History Center

Within the 215,000-square-foot learning center, explore extraordinary state-of-the-art galleries housing more than 200 hands-on audio, video and computer activities. On the history museum’s grounds, you will discover more exhibits rich with tributes to Oklahoma heritage and history. In addition, the Oklahoma History Center houses a café and museum store.

Galleries

ONEOK Gallery

Learn about all 38 federally recognized American Indian tribes currently associated with Oklahoma. The ONEOK Gallery invites visitors to explore the historic past of the native peoples of Oklahoma and experience contemporary American Indian cultures through artifacts, tribal music, photographic images, Indian art and oral histories from the indigenous people of Oklahoma.

Inasmuch Gallery

Celebrate Oklahoma’s involvement with the motion picture industry. In the Inasmuch Gallery, the creativity and innovation of Oklahomans and their legacy of creating, starring in, and watching motion pictures on the silver screen is showcased. The gallery also explores film stories about Cowboys, Westerns, American Indians and Hollywood African American movies filmed in Oklahoma.

Noble Foundation Gallery

Step back in time and experience what it was like for the brave souls who settled Oklahoma’s Great Plains Country and turned homesteads into farms and cities. In the Noble Foundation Gallery, artifacts, images and first-hand accounts illustrate the settlement and development of Oklahoma.

Kerr-McGee Gallery

In the Kerr-McGee Gallery learn about significant events in Oklahoma history that have shaped it into what it is today. Experience the mystery of the steamboat Heroine and how its story was brought to light through archaeological evidence and historical research. Learn about the African American experience in Oklahoma through the Realizing the Dream exhibit highlighting twelve aspects of this unique story. The Power to Grow: The History of Oil and Gas in Oklahoma concentrates on the history of Oklahoma’s gas and oil industry from World War II to the present. The Kerr-McGee Gallery’s military exhibit, illustrates the US armed forces from the 19th century to the present.

Other Museum Areas

In addition to its galleries, the Oklahoma History Center includes the Devon Energy Great Hall, the C.A. Vose Sr. Wing and the West Family Wing. In the Devon Great Hall, view a replica of the renowned Winnie Mae Airplane. The C.A. Vose Sr. Wing includes the center’s Oklahomans and Space exhibit. Currently displayed in the West Family Wing are the Oklahoma Family Tree and Oklahoma Writers: A Literary Tableau exhibits.

The Oklahoma History Center boasts beautifully landscaped grounds rich with tributes to Oklahoma heritage and history. Wander the grounds and explore the center’s outdoor highlights.

14 Flags Over Oklahoma

The 14 Flags Over Oklahoma exhibit features significant flags of different nations and peoples that have lived in Oklahoma, claimed the area and fought for control of Oklahoma’s land, people and resources. See flags representing: the royal standard of Spain, the Union Jack of Great Britain, the royal flag of France, the standard of the Empire of Spain, the standard of France, the second national United States flag, the third national United States flag, the flag of the Republic of Mexico, the first flag of the Republic of Texas, the second flag of the Republic of Texas, the flag of the Choctaw Nation, the first national flag of the Confederacy, the first Oklahoma state flag and the Oklahoma state flag.

 

Red River Botanical Gardens

In Red River Botanical Gardens are examples of the plants, wildlife and geology found across Oklahoma. Discover trees, bushes, flowers and grasses found along the Red River and in other areas of the state in the botanical gardens as well as geologic features that influence the people and history of the Southern Plains.

Devon Energy Oil and Gas Park

Experience a story of risk, innovation, fortunes won and lost, spectacular successes and dramatic challenges. The Devon Energy Oil and Gas Exploration Park features technology that is part of the fascinating history of Oklahoma’s oil industry from drilling to transportation equipment. 

Red River Journey

Experience the Red River, one of the longest rivers in the United States, flowing from the Texas Panhandle along the southern boundary of Oklahoma to the Atchafalaya River in Louisiana. The Red River Journey at the Oklahoma History Center replicates the Red River Valley along Oklahoma’s southern boundary offering visitors an excellent exploration of Oklahoma’s historical landmarks and a sample of its diverse terrains and indigenous trees, flowers and plants.

Dining at Winnie Mae Café

Dine amid a 1930s aviation theme complete with wing counter seating areas, half drum seats, neon signs and a luggage counter. The Winnie Mae Café offers a unique atmosphere with a menu featuring soups, salads and gourmet sandwiches.  

Travel Tips

-          In addition to its permanent galleries, the E.L. & Thelma Gaylord Special Exhibits Gallery inside the Oklahoma History Center hosts changing exhibits that herald Oklahoma’s important citizens and rich heritage.

-          Stop by the Museum Store to shop for items unique to the Oklahoma History Center and Oklahoma.

 

-          Be sure to look for the CCC, Unconquered and Monarch at Rest sculptures on the grounds of the Oklahoma History Center.
