The Liberty Memorial rises 217 feet above the courtyard and is 36 feet in diameter at the base. An open-air observation deck allows visitors one-of-a-kind, spectacular view of the Kansas City skyline.
The top of the Memorial is adorned with four magnificent hand-carved Guardian Spirits, each standing 40 feet high representing Honor, Courage, Patriotism and Sacrifice. The south entrance of the Memorial is guarded by two Assyrian Sphinxes, representing Memory and Future.
The east side of the Liberty Memorial houses Memorial Hall, which contains bronze tablets and various limited-run exhibitions.
The Paul Sunderland Glass Bridge
En route to the Main Gallery, visitors will cross a magnificent glass bridge overlooking a symbolic poppy field frequently found on the Western Front during the war.
Visiting the Main Gallery
The Main Museum Gallery is located beneath the Liberty Memorial and houses a comprehensive history of the First World War. Here you can view an actual Renault FT-17 shell-ravaged tank, walk inside a recreation of a crater resulting from a 17-inch howitzer bomb, watch various videos of first-hand accounts of the war and much, much more.
