Visiting the National Museum of Woodcarving

Start your visit to the National Museum of Woodcarving in the Wooden Nickel Theater. In the National Museum Gallery, woodcarvings made by 70 of the top woodcarvers in the United States including those of Dr. Harley Niblack are on display. Grab a bite to eat in the Snack Shop or enjoy shopping in the National Museum of Woodcarving’s one-of-kind Gift Shop.

The Wooden Nickel Theater

In Wooden Nickel Theater, an orientation film offers insight into how a woodcarver turns a block of wood into a work of art. Additionally, the film will introduce you to Dr. Harley Niblack, an original animator of Disneyland and the creator of 36 scenes at the Museum, some featuring over 1,100 woodcarvings.

 National Museum Gallery

The Museum’s National Museum Gallery features the woodcarvings of Dr. Niblack as well as those made by noted woodcarvers and woodcarving groups. As you explore the National Museum Gallery, you will discover the works of over 70 woodcarvers who have crafted their own unique pieces, from 3D to relief, by hand, power tools and even lasers.  A special display of woodcarvings created by 20 of the top caricature carvers in the U.S., many who are members of the Caricature Carvers of America, are also on view and highlight the different styles of various carvers. Most pieces included in this special display are for sale.

The Woodcarvings of Dr. Niblack

Highlighted within the National Museum of Woodcarving is the life-work of Dr. Niblack who is rumoured to have spent over 70,000 hours creating his wonderful world of woodcarvings. Among Niblack’s works of art are over 30 dioramas with motorized animation, each of which was built using cogs, pulleys and switches.  While some of the dioramas are around 75 years old, they still come to life with the touch of a button. Additional works within the Niblack collection are carved figures, realistic sculptures, stylized pieces like the stunning 1949 sculpture of a female swimmer and hand-carved furniture.
