History of the Legion of Valor Memorial Museum

Created by a band of Civil War and Indian War Campaign veterans who were awarded the Medal of Honor, the Legion of Valor first formulated in Washington, D.C.on April 23, 1890. In the beginning, it was known as "The Medal of Honor Legion". The membership slowly declined after the Spanish Campaign of 1898 and later the Philippines insurrection, therefore on November 25, 1918, the awardees of the Army Distinguished Service Cross were accepted into the membership. Then in 1933, representatives of the United States Navy and United States Marine Corps who were awarded the Navy Cross, were introduced to the membership. The name of this distinguished institution then changed to "The Army and Navy Legion of Valor". However, there would be one last name change with the establishment of the Air Force of Honor and the Air Force Cross. By August 4, 1955, Public Law 224, 84th Congress, integrated the Army and Navy Legion of Valor of the United States. The association encouraged those awarded the Air Force Medal of Honor and the Air Force Cross to join the membership. On June 21, 1961, the name of this prestigious organization became "Legion of Valor of the United States of America, Inc."
