Exhibits

Anthropology

Learn about traditional life on the Snake River Plain. Idaho Museum of Natural History's Anthropology exhibit displays items that interpret traditional life including children’s dolls and games, sagebrush bark clothing, corn husk bags, bows and arrows, basketry, cradleboards and beaded attire. Additionally the exhibit showcases archaeological material such as pottery, ground stone, projectile points and an extensive Paleoindian crescent collection. The Wasden display features a sequence of material uncovered from different depths at Owl Cave such as mammoth bones and associated Folsom points and bison bone from a kill event.

 Earth Sciences

The Earth Sciences exhibit features three displays. The Idaho Geology display explores the natural resources Idaho has to offer including its fossils, minerals and gems. From spiders to dinosaurs and early mammals that roamed Idaho nearly two million years ago, Trackways of Idaho features the footprints of ancient animals, preserved on sandstone. The Earth Sciences exhibit also features Ice-age Megafauna, a display that lets you discover the rich fossil history of the region.  Touch fossils and see the large skeletons of the prehistoric creatures that once roamed Idaho, including saber tooth cats, giant bison and the state fossil, the Hagerman horse.

 Life Sciences

Discover the diverse flora and fauna of the Snake River Plain. Life Sciences examines the native reptiles, amphibians and fish of southern Idaho including never before seen specimens from the Museum’s collections like the desert lizard and the northern leopard frog.  In the Ray J. Davis Herbarium you will find native habitats of southeast Idaho, from sage desert to high alpine. Specimens displayed in the native habitats of southeast Idaho include the yellow glacier lily, camas, syringe and many others.
