Gardens
Ten acres of manicured, themed gardens await you at the Daniel Stowe Botanical Gardens. Enter through the white Tuscan columns of the majestic Visitor’s Pavilion. Columned pergolas lead off from both sides, surrounding the perennial colors of the Four Seasons Garden. Wander through traditional cottage blooms, a crape myrtle grove and fountains. Inviting benches in the Azalea, Serpentine and Ribbon Gardens offer a place to sit and relax. Persimmon Trail, a half-mile loop that winds around the woods, offers encounters with native woodland trees, shrubs and wildflowers in their natural setting along with the wildlife that live there. The Alle Garden features seasonal grey headed coneflower, lavender, Schweinitz’s sunflowers and spiderworts. In the Canal Garden are Allamanda, golden lotus banana and oleander. Summer-blooming perennials native to the South West in the Most Gardens attract bees and butterflies. Daylilies, Indian blanket flowers and scarlet rose mallow can be found in the Ribbon Garden. South African Portuguese squill is scattered throughout Scroll Garden.
Orchid Conservatory
Daniel Stowe Gardens’ Orchid Conservatory, the only glasshouse in the Carolinas, is an 8,000-square-foot, five-story facility devoted to orchids and tropical plants. Highlights of the Orchid Conservatory include a large display of bromeliads and a 16-foot tall Tropical Canvas full of epiphytes. Additionally, the Orchid Conservatory features a world of succulents, ornamental tropical fruits, miniature aquatic plants and rare orchids. Watch beautiful butterflies flutter about in the fall. During the cooler months of the year, the Orchid Conservatory features 5,000 different species and information about the risky expeditions orchid hunters took during Victorian times. Each winter, the Garden presents its Orchid Spectacular: warm up with a mug of hot chocolate and delight in the Orchid Conservatory’s winter wonderland of fairy lights.
Be sure to stop by the Garden Shop. Gifts for garden enthusiasts of all ages including orchids, books, gardening supplies, jewelry, home décor and toys are available to purchase. Drinks and snacks are also sold in the Garden Shop.
