Visiting the Hartford State Capitol

During your visit, take a tour of the Hartford State Capitol. You will get to see the Hall of Flags, House and Senate Chambers and Public Galleries. The Legislative Office Building featuring the Connecticut Hall of Fame, connected to the Capitol by a planted terrace that spans the I-84 ramp and with a 500-foot concourse that runs below the highway for handicapped access and protection from the elements, is also included in the Connecticut State Capitol Tour. 

Hartford State Capitol Tour

Hall of Flags

Located at the west entrance of the Capitol, the Hall of Flags features flags that were carried into battle by Connecticut soldiers from the Civil War to the War on Terror displayed in beautiful oak cases built in 1878. Also located in the Hall of Flags is a statue of William Buckingham, governor of Connecticut during the Civil War.

House and Senate Chambers and Public Galleries

Watch the proceedings of the General Assembly. The Public Gallery above and behind the podium will allow you to observe the proceedings of the General Assembly when the House and Senate are in session.

Legislative Office Building

Included in your visit is a tour of the Legislative Office Building, where public hearings and legislative committee meetings are held. Covered in rough and polished granite from Texas, the Legislative Office Building is a five-story building designed by the architectural firm of Russell Gibson von Dohlen of Farmington.

Inside the Legislative Office Building

 On the first floor of the Legislative Office Building you will find hearing rooms and committee offices for Higher Education and Executive and Legislative Nominations. A cafeteria, a small gift store and offices can also be found on the first floor. On the second floor of the building, watch and participate in the law-making process in several hearing rooms. Senate offices of both parties along with offices for the General Law, Public Safety, Finance, Labor, Energy, Public Health, Education and Environment committees can be found on the third floor. House members and their staff are housed on the fourth floor.  The Legislative Office Building’s fifth floor is comprised of the General Assembly’s nonpartisan staff offices including the Office of Legislative Management, the Office of Fiscal Analysis, the Office of Legislative Research, the Legislative Commissioners’ Office and the Legislative Library.

Connecticut Hall of Fame

Don’t miss the Connecticut Hall of Fame, located in the second floor break-out area of the Legislative Office Building. Connecticut Hall of Fame was established to recognize the outstanding achievements of Connecticut individuals who have distinguished themselves in their professions, nationally or internationally. 

Travel Tips

-          Be sure to bring your camera. Photography is permitted throughout the Hartford State Capitol Building and the Legislative Office Building.

 

-          Food and beverages can be purchased in the Legislative Office Building Cafeteria, open from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Lunch is served from 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. Days the legislature is in session, lunch is served until 3:00 p.m.
