From the Historic Train Depot to the Wood Carved Angels, during your guided tour of Bay Saint Louis, you will discover some of the Bay’s most incredible landmarks.
Historic Train Depot
Start your tour of Bay Saint Louis at the Historic Train Depot. Set amid trees and landscaped grasses, the Historic Train Depot is the location where Robert Redford and Natalie Wood’s “This Property is Condemned” was filmed. Since being built in 1928, the Historic Train Depot has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places and has become the site of major city activities.
Depot District
The completion of the rail line between New Orleans and Mobile during the late 1800s turned the Depot District into a hub of activity. While the Depot District was affected by Hurricane Katarina, buildings continue to reveal Bay St. Louis’ rich historical past and renovations have rightfully restored the district into the cultural, dining and entertainment district it once was.
St. Rose De Lima
As you make your way through Bay Saint Louis you will pass by St. Rose De Lima Catholic Church. Miraculously still standing after Hurricane Katrina, St. Rose De Lima has been serving Bay Saint Louis residents since the early 1920s. Stop by the historic church to see the breathtaking mural on the church’s altar, hand carved from driftwood.
Carved Angels
Gaze upon wood carved angels as you drive through downtown Bay Saint Louis. Once lovely, live oaks, the “Heavenly Carved Wooden Angels” were knocked down during Hurricane Katrina, but since, their trunks have been carved into wonderful works of art. Made by chainsaw wood sculptor Dayle K. Lewis from Indiana, the angels of Bay St. Louis can be spotted at different locations throughout the city.
Old Town’s Main Street
After you’ve seen the spectacular sights of Bay Saint Louis, take a break in the Bay’s Old Town. With authentic character, historic buildings and friendly folks, it has been named one of the “Coolest Small Towns in America” and rated one of the “top ten small beach towns in the country.” Spend time browsing through the shops on Main Street, you will find everything from local art to antiques, gifts to keepsakes.
Dining in Old Town
Old Town is the perfect place to enjoy lunch. At Buttercup choose from a cheerful full menu featuring breakfast and lunch options. Try a world-famous Mockingburger or specialty coffee at the Mockingbird Café. Or dine at Lulu’s, serving meals made from all-natural, organic and local ingredients.
