Visiting the Battleship USS Alabama

During your visit to Battleship Memorial Park, take a self-guided tour of the USS Alabama Battleship to learn the story of USS Alabama and her crew. In Battle Memorial Park’s Galley, you can enjoy a light lunch.

Battleship USS Alabama

The USS Alabama, at 680 feet long ( half as long as the Empire State Building is tall) and displacing more than 44,500 tons, saw 37 months of active duty during World War II. Safely carrying her crew throughout the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean campaigns, the “ Mighty A” as the battleship came to be known never suffered any causalities or significant damage due to enemy fire.  When the war ended, the cost of maintaining the wartime fleet became too big a burden for the United States Navy, and they announced many war ships would be scrapped including the USS Alabama; however, the state of Alabama had different plans in mind for the battleship. Forming the “USS Alabama Battleship Commission,” Alabama citizens raised funds for the preservation of USS Alabama, and she was soon brought home to serve as a memorial for the men and women who served in World War II. 12 decks are open for touring aboard the “Mighty A” and offer a look at the rich history of Battleship USS Alabama and life at sea during World War II. Climb aboard the battleship to explore its many levels and displays. Maps and numbered signs throughout help guide your tour. You’ll have the opportunity to enter gun turrets and explore crew’s quarters, a sick bay and an engine room. In the USS Alabama’s Uptake Theater, a 15-minute film with former World War II USS Alabama crewmen is featured.
