Amarillo Museum of Art Collection
Like many other Texas intuitions built during the 1970s, the Amarillo Museum of Art’s collection began as a non-collecting institution; however, since collection policies were made by the Board of Trustees in 1979, the Museum’s collection has grown steadily. The Museum’s early American Modernist paintings are represented by four watercolour pieces made by Georgia O’Keeffe and several works by John Marin. Works of mid-century modernists such as Franz Kline, Louise Nevelson and Helen Frankenthaler are also included in the collection. Examples of 17th, 18th and 19th century art include two paintings from the mid 1700s by Italian painter Francesco Guardi. Dominating the art museum’s photography collection is the work of F.S.A photographer Russell Lee. Additional works within the medium by Russell Lee’s colleagues Dorothea Lange, Arthur Rothstein, Jack Delano and Marion Post Wolcott are also included in the Museum’s photography collection.
Price Gallery of Asian Art
Thanks to Dr. and Mrs. Price of Amarillo, the Museum’s Asian collection, located in Price Gallery, has grown substantially. Over 350 works of art collected by Dr. and Mrs. Price including sculpture, prints, paintings, textiles and decorative arts from South and Southeast Asia, Japan and the Middle East have been gifted to the Museum over the years and sparked a variety of significant exhibitions. The Asian collection is comprised of textiles from the Middle East including 75 Islamic prayer rugs and secular rugs, saddle blankets and bags from Turkey, Afghanistan, Iran, Spain and Tibet as well as a comprehensive collection of Edo period Japanese wood block prints. Of particular significance is the Museum’s Hindu and Buddhist sculptures dating from the 2nd to 19th centuries from Cambodia, Nepal and Indonesia.
Be sure to stop by the Amarillo Museum of Art Gift Shop. Numerous fine art catalogues and posters published and distributed by the Museum are available to purchase. Southeast Asian and East Indian artifacts as well as works by renowned modernist artists like Georgia O’Keeffe and John Marin can also be found in the Gift Shop.
