Galleries and Exhibits

Journey through aviation and space flight history as you explore the aviation museum’s galleries. See a full-size model of the 1903 Wright Flyer in Early Flyers. Lighter than Air features artifacts from the famous airship Hindenburg. Learn about famous flyers such as Charles Lindbergh, Bessie Coleman, Richard Byrd and Amelia Earhart in The Golden Age. World War I, World War II and Cold War galleries feature unique artifacts and scale models of historic military aircrafts. Learn about the accomplishments African Americans have made throughout aviation history despite adversity and limited opportunities in Tuskegee Airmen. The Civil Air Transport and Air America exhibit is dedicated to the personnel that took part in one of the greatest relatively unknown chapters in the annals of aviation history.

Southwest Airlines: The Heart of Our History

Learn about Dallas’ own Southwest Airlines in The Heart of Our History, from its humble beginnings at Love Field as a three-airplane carrier in 1971 to its current place as the airline with the world’s largest fleet of Boeing 737s. Board the Boeing 737-300 Spirit of Kitty Hawk, the first-300 example that the airlines flew, and explore the aircraft’s flight deck and passenger cabin featuring displays of memorabilia, original art and items from the personal collections of Southwest Founder and Chairman Emeritus Herb Kelleher and President Colleen C. Barrett. The aviation exhibit also features the nose of a Boeing 737-200, set up so visitors can view both the flight deck and the avionics bay underneath.

Apollo 7

At the heart of the Space Flight gallery is the spacecraft used for the Apollo 7 mission. On loan from the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum in Washington D.C., the spacecraft was used by astronauts Walter Cunningham, Walter Schirra and Donn Eisele to accomplish the first manned flight of the Apollo Program from October 11 to October 22 in 1968.
