Architectural Features of the State Line Post Office and Federal Building
The Texarkana U.S. Post Office and Federal Building was one of the many buildings designed under the sponsorship of the Office of the Supervising Architect for the Treasury Department, an office responsible for the design and construction of public buildings such as custom houses, post offices and courthouses for more than 75 years. Many of the buildings created by the Office of the Supervising Architect for the Treasury Department, including the State Line Post Office and Federal Building, were not only designed to serve a federal function, but to express the permanence and presence of the federal government in the cities and communities in which the buildings were located. Marvel at the gray Arkansas limestone building made of steel and concrete and comprised of five stories, a basement and service penthouse. While occasional Art Deco features betray its date of construction, the building is steadfastly Beaux Arts in form and organization. The monumental, Beaux Arts structure, combined with its unique position, gives the building an unusual prominence in the city, seemingly towering over the downtown area just as its creators intended it to.
