Birmingham’s Statue of Liberty
Known as the symbol of America, the monument of freedom and independence and the most well-known sculpture in the world, Birmingham, Alabama’s Lady of Liberty is the largest replica of the Statue of Liberty, even surpassing the original model that currently resides in France. Birmingham’s Statue of Liberty was originally built to sit atop the Liberty National Insurance Company and after being cast at the Antoine Durenne, a cast iron and bronze foundry in Sommerville Haut Marine, France, it graced the top of the Liberty National Insurance Company for over 30 years. In 1989, the city’s Lady Liberty was carefully removed, restored and moved to her current location in Vestavia Hills’ Liberty Park. Today, Birmingham’s Statue of Liberty stands proudly atop a 60-foot tall granite pedestal adjacent to Interstate 459, her flame lit with Alabama natural gas burns continuously.
Natural Surroundings
The small park area at the base of the statue is located atop Shades Mountain. Views of Shades Valley to the north and the Appalachian foothills to the south as well the park’s beautiful lakes, trees that overhang pathways and dripping Wisteria provide visitors with ample photo opportunities.
