Byward Market - Then & Now

History of Byward Market

Established in 1826 by John By, Byward Market is Ottawa’s birthplace. While the market has evolved over the years and many original industries have given way to boutiques and restaurants, the traditional, unpolished market place and its Victorian charm have become more popular than modern shops, offering something for everyone.

Byward Market Today

Today Byward Market is an historic farmers’ market and shopping district by day and its restaurants and entertainment make the district a favorite social scene by night. Find unusual treasures in one of Byward Market’s boutiques, or taste something new at one of the cafes or restaurants during your one and a half hour visit to Byward Market.
