This trip isn’t like your typical bus tour. Instead, you’ll be aboard the catamaran-style electric boat. The modern, all-electric tour boats are excellent choices to protect and preserve Niagara Falls’ natural wonder and beauty.
You’ll have much to take in visually and otherwise on the 20-minute boat trip. Additionally, you will be admitted to the observation deck that extends over the Niagara Gorge. The view is exceptional, bringing all three falls into your vision.
You can access the gorge’s base through the elevators at the Observation Tower. Then, you can board the Maid of the Mist for your boat tour.
Stairs are available at American Falls to take you to the Crow’s Nest viewing point. That is another location to take in breathtaking views.
The boat tour is only available from Niagara Falls, New York, USA. All boats depart from the landing at the lower gorge in Niagara Falls State Park at Prospect Point.
the tour location comprises three sections, as follows:
The American Falls
You will be staring at 190 feet (58 meters) drop at the American Falls. This section adjoins the right bank and is as wide as 1,060 feet or 320 meters. The closer you get to the falls, the more energy you’ll feel from the plunging rapids.
This section has rapids above the falls that reach a maximum speed of 40 km/h or 25 mph. Even so, the falls themselves have recorded up to 68 mph. It is one thing to see from afar and another to experience the rushing water up close through the Maid of the Mist boat tour.
Bridal Veil Falls
Like a motorcoach trip driving through different sections, the Maid of the Mist will bring you to the Bridal Veil Falls. While smaller, this section is equally impressive and visually appealing. It is next to American Falls, with Luna Island in between.
The Bridal Veil Falls resembles a bride’s veil, hence its name. Moving past this section brings you to the most critical and aggressive part of Niagara Falls, the Canadian Horseshoe Falls.
The Canadian Horseshoe Falls
This section adjoins the Canadian bank and is the most extensive (by size) of the three falls. It features a 188-foot (57-meter) plunge. The curving crest line has a length of about 2,200 feet or 670 meters.
Over 168,000 cubic meters of water (6 million cubic ft.) go over the crestline of the falls every minute. However, this volume happens during peak daytime tourist hours, as the water often tames to lower figures.
Other Details
Evolution of the Maid of the Mist
Boat tours in Niagara began with a twin-stack sidewheel. Then, the boats evolved into single-stack steamers in 1885. This improvement allowed the boats to get closer to the Horseshoe Falls than any had managed before.
The first modern Maid of the Mist boat sailed the Niagara River in 1955. This boat drew power from twin diesel engines and had steel bodies. Notwithstanding, the tour was committed to protecting this iconic wonder and the beauty it brings to tourists and the world.
Visitors can now savor the sight aboard the two zero-emission vessels as they sail through the three falls. The vessels have changed the boat trip and made the group tour more fun and less damaging to the environment.
A few significant details about the newer zero-emission boats include the following:
-
They are the first all-electric passenger vessels in North America to be constructed for Niagara Falls.
-
The boats use lithium-ion energy storage battery systems for efficiency and long-lasting boat trips.
-
The environment is safe thanks to zero emissions from the boats
-
Tourists can focus on the rushing rapids and waves on the near-silent boats with minimal vibration.
-
The boats have complete power redundancy, with propulsion split between two hulls.
-
The group tours are available during the rainy and sunny seasons.
-
There is complimentary Wi-Fi throughout Niagara Falls State Park.
The silent boat operation and little vibration modernize the experience. Wave-induced motion is reduced compared to a single-hull vessel.
Forward bow thrusters are available on the boats to enhance steering, especially as they sail across the mighty falls. This addition allows the vessels to rotate 360 degrees in the river. That is enough for maneuverability and escaping dangerous situations that may arise during the boat tour.
