What You See

This Lakeview overlook, located in Lake Mead National Recreation Area, is a scenic, panoramic view of the Boulder Basin. Facing northwest you can see the Hemenway Harbor, one of the tunnels of the Hoover Historic Railroad and powerlines from Hoover Dam. Looking northeast, you can see Rock, Boulder and Saddle Islands and as far as the Callville Mesa, Muddy Mountains and Black Mountains. This is the perfect place to enjoy a beautiful sunrise or sunset.

What Makes the Lake SO Blue?

The contrast between the volcanic rock of the Black Mountains and the lake make the water’s blue color appear especially vibrant. Lake Mead’s water is so clear, which paired with a sunny sky and its dissolved minerals makes for perfectly blue water.

Historic Railroad Hiking Trail

The overlook is situated right along the 0.9 mile Historic Railroad Hiking Trail. This route typically takes about 24 minutes to complete and is perfect for hiking and mountain biking. Dogs are welcome along the trail and allowed off-leash in some areas. Along the trail, enjoy sweeping views of Lake Mead in between the giant long-abandoned railroad tunnels.

Do You Have to Hike to See the Overlook?

You do not need to hike in order to take in this spectacular view. You can drive straight up to the overlook. You don’t even need to leave your car, with the beautiful viewpoint from the parking lot.

Accessibility

The overlook itself is handicap accessible, however the trails have some accessibility barriers.

There are no restrooms, drinking fountains, or amenities so come prepared.
